ANALYSIS: SpaceX to simulate astronaut ejection in final test

SpaceX will on Sunday simulate its emergency abort system on an unmanned spacecraft, the last major test before it plans to send NASA astronauts to the International Space Station.
The space company of entrepreneur Elon Musk, under contract with NASA, will launch its Crew Dragon capsule from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida between 8:00 am (1300 GMT) and 2:00 pm.
This test will check the capsule's ability to reliably carry crew to safety in the event of an emergency on ascent.
One minute and 24 seconds after takeoff, at an altitude of approximately 12 miles (19 kilometers) above the Atlantic, the Crew Dragon will trigger a planned ejection from the Falcon 9 rocket carrying it into the atmosphere.
The capsule's descent into the water will be slowed by parachutes, while the Falcon 9 is expected to break up.
The rocket could explode and possibly create "a fireball of some kind", said Benji Reed, director of crew mission management for SpaceX, at a press conference on Friday.
Originally scheduled for Saturday, the test was pushed back due to high winds and rough seas in the ditching area.
The success of this test is essential for SpaceX and for NASA, which urgently needs to certify a spacecraft to transport its astronauts to the ISS this year.
Since 2011, the United States has been obliged to have its astronauts travel on Russia's Soyuz rockets, the only available spacecraft since the retirement of the American shuttles.
In March 2019, SpaceX successfully made a one-week round trip to the ISS with Crew Dragon.
The first manned flight of the capsule is expected to take place in March at the earliest, said NASA commercial flight program chief Kathy Lueders on Friday.

WASHINGTON - The Air Force is using SpaceX’s fledgling satellite network to test encrypted internet services for a number of military planes, the space company’s president said on Tuesday, detailing results for the first customer of Elon Musk’s planned constellation of thousands of broadband-beaming satellites.

“We are delivering high bandwidth into the cockpit of Air Force planes,” SpaceX President and Chief Operating Officer Gwynne Shotwell said on Tuesday. “Right now we’re just testing the capability and figuring out how to make it work.”
SpaceX’s so-called Starlink constellation, a planned network of up to 30,000 satellites in low Earth orbit intended to beam broadband internet globally, is crucial to generating the cash to fund development of Musk’s heavy-lift Mars rocket dubbed Starship.
The Air Force program, known as Global Lightning, started testing with SpaceX in early 2018 and used Starlink’s first two test satellites to beam to terminals fixed to a C-12 military transport plane in flight, demonstrating internet speeds of 610 megabits per-second, SpaceX Senior Vice President Tim Hughes said. That’s fast enough to download a movie in under a minute.
SpaceX launched in May the first batch of 60 operational satellites into low Earth orbit and plans to launch another 60 in November from an Air Force station in Florida.
Shotwell said the program, part of a $28 million Pentagon contract awarded to SpaceX in late 2018, is ongoing and expects to test Starlink with “a number” of additional military aircraft types. That contract also includes testing communications between satellites in orbit.
The U.S. military is increasingly dependent on satellites to determine what it does on the ground, guiding munitions with space-based lasers and satellites as well as securing such assets from satellite-jamming technology from Russia and China.
The head of the new U.S. Space Command, General John Raymond, told reporters in September that he visited SpaceX’s Starlink factory in Redmond, Washington, but did not go into details about the Pentagon’s plans.

Starlink is competing with Softbank-backed OneWeb, which aims to give millions of people in remote and rural areas high-speed internet beamed down from space and has already launched a batch of six satellites. Raymond said he also visited OneWeb’s new satellite production line in Cape Canaveral, Florida.

From the Soviet's pioneering satellite to the first man on the Moon 50 years ago, here are 10 key dates in space exploration.
- 1957: Sputnik -

On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launches the first artificial space satellite, Sputnik 1, ushering in the Cold War tussle for the cosmos.
The beach ball-sized aluminium sphere takes 98 minutes to orbit the Earth and sends back the first message from space, simple "beep-beep-beep" radio signals.
On November 3, Sputnik 2 carries the first living being to fully orbit the Earth, a small street dog called Laika. She dies after a few hours.
- 1961: Gagarin, first man -
On April 12, 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin becomes the first man in space, completing a single, 108-minute orbit.
Twenty-three days later, Alan Shepard is the first American in space when he makes a 15-minute trip on May 5.
The Cold War rivals are only joined in space by a third country in 2003 when China sends up Yang Liwei onboard lunar orbiter Shenzou V.
- 1969: on the Moon -
On July 21, 1969, US astronaut Neil Armstrong is the first man to step onto the Moon, his teammate Edwin Aldrin joining him around 20 minutes later.
Between 1969 and 1972, 12 astronauts -- all American -- walked on the Moon as part of NASA's Apollo program.
- 1971: space station -
On April 19, 1971, the Soviet Union launches the first orbital space station, Salyut 1.
Construction of the still-operating International Space Station (ISS) starts in 1998. The biggest man-made structure in space, it orbits Earth 16 times a day.
The ISS, in which 16 countries participate, took over from the Russian space station Mir, which was brought back to Earth in 2001 after 15 years in orbit.
- 1976: Mars -
On July 20, 1976, US spacecraft Viking 1 becomes the first to successfully land on Mars and send back images of the Red Planet.
The robot Opportunity explored Mars between 2004 and 2018, with NASA's Curiosity Rover still active there.
About 40 missions have been sent to Mars, more than half failing.
- 1981: space shuttle -
On April 12, 1981, the US space shuttle Columbia, the first reusable manned spacecraft, makes its first voyage.
It is followed by Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis and Endeavour, which serve the ISS until the shuttle programme winds up in 2011.
The United States has since depended on Russia to transport its astronauts to the ISS.
Two US shuttles were destroyed in flight, with the loss of 14 astronauts: Challenger in 1986 and Columbia in 2003.
- 1990: Hubble -
On April 25, 1990, the Hubble is the first space telescope to be placed into orbit, at 547 kilometres (340 miles) from Earth.
Thirteen metres (42 feet) long, Hubble revolutionises astronomy, allowing scientists to observe the planets and most distant stars and galaxies.
- 2001: space tourist -
On April 28, 2001, Italian American multi-millionaire Dennis Tito, 60, becomes the world's first space tourist. He pays Russia $20 million to stay on the ISS for eight days.
In all, seven space tourists have taken Russian flights to the ISS.
- 2008: private SpaceX -
On September 29, 2008, US company SpaceX is the first private venture to successfully launch a rocket into space, its Falcon 1.
SpaceX's Dragon cargo ship on May 22, 2012 becomes the first commercial spacecraft to visit the ISS.
- 2014: comet landing -
On November 12, 2014, the European Space Agency places a small robot, Philae, on a comet more than 500 million kilometres from Earth. The first comet lander is part of a mission aiming to explore the origins of the Solar System.
The man-made object that is the furthest away from the Earth is the unmanned US spaceship Voyager 1, launched in September 1977 and still travelling. In August 2012 it made it into interstellar space, about 13 billion miles from Earth.

SpaceX blasts off Luxembourg government satellite

    SpaceX on Wednesday blasted off a four-ton secure military communications satellite called GovSat-1, a partnership between the government of Luxembourg and the satellite operator SES.
    The prime minister and deputy prime minister of Luxembourg were in Florida for the launch, along with the prince and princess of Luxembourg, SpaceX said.
    "There you saw a successful liftoff of the Falcon 9," a SpaceX commentator said as the rocket launched on a sunny day from Cape Canaveral at 4:25 pm (2125 GMT).
    The satellite will enable "secure communication links between theaters of tactical operations, for maritime missions or over areas affected by humanitarian crises," said a SpaceX statement.
    GovSat-1 is bound for a distant, geostationary orbit and will support communications within Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
    It will also enable operations over the Atlantic and Indian oceans and the Mediterranean and Baltic seas.
    SpaceX did not attempt to land the first stage of the rocket after launch. The launch did however use a booster that flew last year.
    The California-based company headed by space and solar energy tycoon Elon Musk has landed 21 rockets after launch as part of its effort to re-use costly rocket parts and bring down the costs of spaceflight.
    Wednesday's launch comes three weeks after SpaceX blasted off a secretive US government payload, called Zuma.
    According to media reports, the satellite did not make it into orbit, though the Pentagon refused to elaborate on what happened.
    SpaceX said everything functioned fine with the rocket, and declined to comment further, citing national security concerns.
