Four die in a terrorist attack in London
An assault on Parliament
AT LEAST four people have been killed in a terrorist attack in Westminster, central London, in the early afternoon of March 22nd. The attack began when a man drove a car into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge, killing two of them. A video shows a number of people lying on the road, being attended to by other members of the public.
Police say the driver of the car then entered the estate of the Houses of Parliament and stabbed a police officer, killing him. The leader of the House of Commons, David Lidington, told members of Parliament that the “alleged assailant was shot by armed police”. The attacker subsequently died.
Scotland Yard is treating the attack, which took place on the first anniversary of attacks that killed 32 people in Brussels, as a terrorist incident. Extra police officers have been deployed across London. After chairing a meeting of the government’s emergency committee, Theresa May, the prime minister, condemned what she described as a “sick and depraved terrorist attack” on the “heart of our capital city”.
