MSNBC Shifts Ronan Farrow, Joy-Ann Reid; Thomas Roberts Returns to Dayside (TVNewser)
A year-old experiment at MSNBC is coming to an end. The Reid Report is being canceled, and we can now confirm that Ronan Farrow Daily is also being shelved. Both Reid and Farrow will take on new roles with the network. TVNewser Reid joined MSNBC as a contributor in 2011 and was given her own show in the 2 p.m. timeslot, The Reid Report, as the result of the last programming shake-up in early 2014. Variety The NBCUniversal cable-news outlet, which has suffered significant ratings declines in recent years, said it would transition Farrow into a role as a special correspondent who will contribute to primetime specials and other programs rather than host his own show, while Reid will take on a national correspondent position. THR From 1-3 p.m. ET, Thomas Roberts now will anchor a two-hour block of news programming every weekday. The new role, which starts March 2, will have Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski pinch-hitting at MSNBC'S Way Too Early until a permanent replacement is found. Tamron Hall is staying on at 11 a.m., as is Andrea Mitchell at noon. Politico / Dylan Byers on Media Earlier this month, MSNBC registered its lowest full-day rating in nearly a decade, drawing an average of 55,000 viewers in the all-important 25- to 54-year-old demo. In January, MSNBC's daytime ratings were down 20 percent in total and 37 percent in the demo when compared to the previous year. In primetime, total viewership was down 23 percent, while the demo dropped by 39 percent.

Dean Baquet: NYT Will Retire 'System of Pitching Stories for The Print Page 1' (Poynter / MediaWire)
New York Times executive editor Dean Baquet announced Thursday the Times is retiring its system of pitching stories for page one of the print edition in a memo to staff that outlines the paper's growing emphasis on digital journalism. Politico / Dylan Byers on Media The changes, Baquet wrote, "are intended to ensure that our digital platforms are much less tethered to print deadlines... This new system will, in particular, give us more flexibility in targeting readers on mobile (which now receives more than half of our traffic) and on platforms like Facebook (where we are rolling out new strategies for presenting our journalism)." HuffPost In the memo, Baquet said Times desk editors would "pitch their best enterprise pieces for digital slots on what we're calling Dean's List." Each day, he wrote, the Times masthead editors would select which stories from this list "will receive the very best play on all our digital platforms -- Web, mobile, social and others yet to come." WWD / Memo Pad "It's worth noting that the tradition of selecting page one stories under the old system has long made the Times distinctive," the editor said, adding that this new system does not include news stories. "We are seeking to preserve the rigor of this process, but update it for the digital age. Desks will compete for the best digital, rather than print, real estate." The Times will still have its afternoon meeting for page one, but that process will "play a less prominent role," he offered.

Allison Williams Defends Her Dad (PRNewser)
Allison Williams spoke at an event at New York's 92nd Street YMCA about recent events involving her father Brian. Allison Williams noted that the past weeks have been toughest on her dad, but she defended him via her own experience: "One thing this experience has not done is shake my trust and belief in him as a man. He's a really good man. He's an honest man, he's a truthful man. He has so much integrity, he cares so much about journalism." TVNewser The actress, who mentioned several times during an interview with Late Night host Seth Meyers that she is extremely close with her family, said the past weeks have been hard on all of them, but "toughest on my dad." TVNewser It was announced Thursday that Brian Williams has resigned from the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation board of directors, according to a message on the foundation's website. He had served the position since 2006. Mediaite Brian Williams stepped down just weeks after NBC News suspended him for six months for embellishing war stories. His ultimate fate is unknown at this point, as NBC has scrubbed his name from the newscast and there's been some speculation he may not come back at the end of the six months.

Yahoo! Launches Mobile Developer Suite (SocialTimes)
Yahoo! announced its new Mobile Developer Suite Thursday at the company's first Mobile Developer Conference. The platform is designed to help developers understand, measure, advertise, monetize and enhance their apps. Mashable The new set of tools for app makers combines Yahoo!'s Flurry analytics platform, the BrightRoll and Gemini ad networks, and Yahoo! search. The star of the suite is Flurry, the mobile analytics platform that Yahoo! acquired last year. More than 200,000 developers use Flurry, but the suite also leverages Yahoo!'s native advertising and marketing tools. WSJ / Digits The event reflected the growing importance Yahoo! is placing on mobile ads as chief executive Marissa Mayer seeks to remake the Internet portal for the smartphone era. Now the most important driver of Yahoo!'s growth, mobile sales excluding commissions were $254 million in the fourth quarter, or about one-fifth of the company's total revenue. That figure jumped 23 percent from the previous quarter, while overall sales continued to stagnate.

Parks And Recreation Co-Executive Producer Harris Wittels Dead at 30 (TMZ)
Harris Wittels, one of the executive producers of Parks And Recreation, died at his home Thursday from a possible drug overdose. According to law enforcement sources, Wittels was pronounced dead around 1 p.m. We're told the 30-year-old was found lying on his couch and there was drug paraphernalia in the house. There were no signs of trauma to his body. Time "Today, I lost a friend," Parks star Amy Poehler said at a Variety charity event Thursday, unite4humanity. "I lost a dear, young friend in my life who was struggling with addiction. I'm sharing it with you because life and death live so close together, and we walk that fine line every day." USA Today In addition to his TV work, Wittels is credited with coining the popular term humblebrag, a word defined on Amazon.com as brags that are "ever-so-thinly disguised as transparent humility." He wrote a 2012 book, Humblebrag: The Art of False Modesty, based on a Twitter feed dedicated to such boastings. Besides Parks, Wittels' other writing credits include Eastbound & Down and The Sarah Silverman Program.

Bill O'Reilly Shoots Down Mother Jones War Report: 'A Giant Piece of Defamation' (TVNewser)
Mother Jones calls it "Bill O'Reilly's Brian Williams Problem." In a piece by Washington bureau chief David Corn published late Thursday afternoon, the left-leaning news site claims the right-leaning Fox News Channel host has told false stories about his reporting nearly 33 years ago, when he was a correspondent with CBS News. THR O'Reilly responded, saying Corn is a "liar," who "saw an opportunity to smear" him and took it. O'Reilly adds that there is video evidence to back up his recollections. "If he is reporting that I have exaggerated, embellished or lied, then he's the liar," O'Reilly said. "Everything I said is verifiable. You can see the video tape." Deadline In its report, Mother Jones cites Susan Zirinsky, a longtime CBS News producer who helped manage the network's coverage of the war from Buenos Aires, who is quoted saying, of American reporters, "Nobody got to the war zone during the Falklands war." She is cited as telling Mother Jones she does not remember what O'Reilly did during his time in Argentina. "But she notes that the military junta kept U.S. reporters from reaching the islands: 'You weren't allowed on by the Argentinians. No CBS person got there,'" Mother Jones reported.

Discovery Q4 Net Income Falls 13 Percent After Sluggish Results at U.S. Networks (Variety)
Discovery Communications said tepid performance at its flagship U.S. networks resulted in a 13 percent dip in the fourth quarter, even as revenue increased. The Silver Spring, Md. owner of TLC, Discovery Channel and Investigation Discovery said net income in the period came to $250 million, or 38 cents per share, compared with $289 million, or 41 cents per share, in the year-earlier quarter. THR The company cited "higher restructuring costs and lower equity earnings" as drivers behind the lower profit. Discovery was also affected by lower U.S. ratings and foreign-exchange headwinds in the latest quarter. Deadline Discovery reported revenues of $1.68 billion, up 9 percent. The revenue number is below the Street's $1.70 billion consensus estimate.

DirecTV Reports Lower Fourth-Quarter Profit, Improved U.S. Subscriber Growth (THR)
DirecTV on Thursday reported lower fourth-quarter earnings, but exceeded Wall Street expectations, and said it added more U.S. subscribers in the final quarter of 2014 than in the year-ago period. The satellite TV giant posted earnings of $778 million, compared with $810 million in the year-ago period. Variety As of Thursday, according to DirecTV and Disney, DirecTV subs can at long last access WatchESPN -- the sports programmer's Internet streaming-video service, launched more than four years ago -- along with other Disney and ABC digital-video services. The No. 1 satcaster's activation of Disney TV Everywhere services follows the omnibus deal it reached with Disney/ESPN in December.

Warner Bros. Leads $24 Million Investment in Machinima (THR)
Warner Bros. is building on its relationship with gaming-centric digital media firm Machinima. The studio has led a $24 million financing round in the company, which also operates a YouTube network. The company's network of online video creators has more than 430 million subscribers. According to comScore, that traffic ranks Machinima ninth in the U.S. among online-video entertainment sites and fourth among males.

Thursday, a chunk of staffers from the Tea Party News Network, a news site with nearly 12 million unique visitors per month, sent in their resignations over the company's "despicable practices." Politico / Dylan Byers on Media The resignations came after a Daily Beast report showed how the three-year-old conservative news site fell into posting click bait smut, like videos of fights and burning cars.

Speculation Swirls Around Nikki Finke's Future at Deadline Hollywood (LA Times)
Deadline Hollywood founder Nikki Finke is famous for breaking news on the entertainment industry. But on Sunday night the hot Hollywood gossip was being reported not by her but about her. Speculation about Finke's future at Deadline Hollywood heated up after rival online publication TheWrap reported that Finke was dismissed from her position after clashing with Jay Penske, the chief executive of Penske Media Corp., or PMC, which owns Deadline Hollywood. Deadline Hollywood Here is an official response just sent internally: "This is a complete fabrication, with not an ounce of truth to it. Just to be clear, Nikki Finke has a multi-year contract with the company, and it is the company's absolute intention to continue its obligations under the agreement. It is sad when a rival business feels the need to fabricate stories to create traffic and notoriety. Due to the defamatory and disparaging nature of some of the completely inaccurate statements made by Waxman, PMC has turned this matter over to our attorneys." TheWrap / WaxWord Penske emailed TheWrap to say: "Sharon, your story isn't true and all of the "facts" that you mention are completely erroneous." When asked repeatedly if Finke was in fact leaving Deadline, he did not respond. Finke did not return an email or call seeking comment. BuzzFeed Let's assume, though, that it's the beginning of the end for Nikki's Deadline. Penske isn't going to stop owning Variety -- reportedly the most recent cause of their friction, since he's shut her out of having anything to do with it -- and I've heard from multiple people that her contract is up soon. (TheWrap's Sharon Waxman reported that it expires next year.) Penske knew he bought crazy, but he may just be sick of it at this point. FishbowlLA Waxman's report has shot "Nikki Finke" onto Twitter's Los Angeles Trends chart. All we know for sure right now is that the Deadline doyenne's current contract ends in 2014. Anything else, including the idea that a removal or exit of Finke is a prelude to Penske folding Deadline into Variety, is pure speculation.

Sources Say Viewers Will See Less of Blitzer; More of Younger, Hunkier Newsmen (New York Daily News / Confidential)
He doesn't know it Yet, but the CNN staff is whispering that Wolf Blitzer's air time may be getting shorter and shorter. The struggling cable channel plans to make lots of changes as it tries to win back viewers it has lost, with the biggest shakeup being to on-air talent, including Blitzer, host of The Situation Room With Wolf Blitzer. "Wolf is going to be gradually phased out and replaced with a younger, hipper host," one CNN insider dishes to Confidential. "The decision has been made that people want to look at beautiful people, and although Wolf is no beast, they're thinking younger." TVNewser The Daily News's gossip item about Blitzer contradicts current reality, a CNN spokesperson says. The spokesperson tells us, "The 'CNN insider' must not be watching CNN air. Wolf has been anchoring additional hours as of late."

Xanga Is Shutting Down (Valleywag)
Let's feel nostalgic for 45 seconds or so: Xanga, the LiveJournal/MySpace hybrid that once boasted 30 million active users but never quite managed to capture enough weepy teenage hearts, is on the brink of death and begging for money. Unless the service -- a relic of an older, poorly designed era of the Web -- raises $60,000 from its own scant users by July 15, it'll shutter forever. It almost certainly won't. The Verge While the team could try to revamp the site or sell to a larger platform, they're realistic about their prospects. "The thing is, it's really hard to grow a social site that has fallen from previous heights. MySpace, Friendster, LiveJournal... lots of people have tried to resurrect these sites, and it has rarely, if ever, worked."

Politico Hires FP's Susan Glasser to Head New Long-Form Journalism, Opinion Divisions (Politico / Dylan Byers on Media)
Some truly game-changing news on the Washington media scene Sunday night: Politico has hired Susan Glasser, the editor-in-chief of Foreign Policy, to serve as editor of new long-form journalism and opinion divisions -- a move the editors call "the largest expansion of our company in three years." NYT Politico, the website for those addicted to the machinations of Washington, has made a hire that will stir its own intrigue in the nation's capital.

The Day That Should Change Tornado Actions And Storm Chasing Forever (The Washington Post / Capital Weather Gang)
Despite or perhaps due to accurate forecasts for violent tornadoes near Oklahoma City Friday afternoon and evening, motorists and storm chasers found themselves in harm's way and some of the outcomes were tragic. Most likely, the vehicle deaths were preventable. Their occurrence should squash the idea that trying to flee a tornado in a car is a good idea. And storm chasers -- who pursued the tornadic storms much too closely -- set a poor example and need to re-examine their priorities. TVNewser The star of the Discovery Channel series Storm Chasers, Tim Samaras, was killed in a tornado that ripped through Oklahoma on Friday. He was killed just hours after he appeared on MSNBC's The Cycle to talk about the severe weather pattern. Samaras' son Paul and his storm-chasing partner Carl Young were also killed in the storm.

AppleApple's iRadio Plans Warm Up (Financial Times)
Apple is looking more likely to launch its long-awaited music streaming service at its Worldwide Developers Conference, which begins on June 10, after agreeing to terms with Warner Music's recorded music and music publishing divisions for the service known as "iRadio." Warner, the third-largest global music company, became the first music publisher to agree to a deal for iRadio, people close to the negotiations said, after Apple agreed to pay its songwriters 10 percent of advertising revenue, more than double the 4 percent rate it earns from Pandora, the U.S.-based internet radio service with more than 70 million "active listeners." Mashable The news comes one month after the company reached another deal with Universal Music. Talks are still underway with Sony, according to the report. The New York Times Apple's Internet radio feature is expected to be free and supported by advertising, and would represent a relatively late arrival by the company into what has become a fast-growing - if low-margin - sector of the music business. Apple is said to be negotiating directly with the music groups because it wants more extensive licensing terms. Billboard Earlier this year, Apple had sought a far lower royalty rate of 0.08 cents per stream, but with a chance to get a larger cut of the advertising revenue Apple would generate from the radio service. Record companies rejected the initial offer, saying Apple's terms would have put the labels in an awkward position of having to explain to Congress why that was acceptable for Apple, but not for other internet radio services.

LinkedIn Rolls Out Two-Factor Authentication (SocialTimes)
LinkedIn Friday introduced support for two-factor authentication for users who choose to enable the security feature. The rollout follows a similar move by Twitter. VentureBeat Two-factor authentication is a more secure means of proving your identity to a company's server than the traditional username and password combination. In most cases, two-factor authentication requires the input of a temporary code, which is provided to you either through an app like Google Authenticator, an SMS message or through a dongle, such as RSA's tokens. LinkedIn will provide these codes through SMS messages. GigaOM But two-factor authentication, which essentially asks you to confirm your identity with a second code from a device like a smartphone when you go to enter your password, is just a start. Many people have written why two-factor authentication won't solve all your security needs - it's certainly not a foolproof way to prevent attacks as the sophistication of hackers evolves to target specific individuals in an organization.

Facebook Removes Ads from Firm That Promises to Lie for its Customers (AllFacebook)

At Long Last, Interactive TV Advertising Has Arrived with Twitter's Latest Product (LostRemote)
Twitter has just announced a new advertising product, powered by recent acquisition Bluefin Labs, that enables an advertiser to target promoted tweets to viewers who have watched its ads on TV. It doesn't happen instantaneously - think of it as an interactive extension of the commercial that lives on Twitter for hours or days to come. AdAge The sell here is to allow TV advertisers -- already spending a lot on their TV spots -- to message those consumers again. Twitter is also targeting past viewers of shows on the assumption that if they've watched a show in the past, they might be watching again, even if they're not posting about it. The Verge Thursday Twitter also announced a raft of new partners, including A&E, Bloomberg Television, Clear Channel, MLB and several others who will be using the company's Amplify program to push clips, extras, and other goodies to Twitter users who are watching live. For Twitter, it's a sign that its still-young advertising business has been a success, especially around live events.

Boy Scouts Lift Ban on Gay Members: How Twitter Reacted (Mashable)
The Boy Scouts of America's governing council voted on Thursday to allow openly gay scouts to join local troops for the first time in the organization's 103-year history. Big-name celebrities and ordinary citizens alike took to Twitter to voice their support or opposition to the decision - as well as, of course, to crack jokes.

Obama: Leak Investigations 'May Chill Investigative Journalism' (HuffPost / The Backstory)
President Obama said Thursday that he is "troubled by the possibility that leak investigations may chill the investigative journalism that holds government accountable." In a major speech on national security, Obama said that the "Justice Department's investigation of national security leaks offers a recent example of the challenges involved in striking the right balance between our security and our open society." TPM / LiveWire President Obama reiterated his support for a new media shield law to "guard against government over-reach" and has directed attorney general Eric Holder to review the Justice Department's guidelines with reporters. The Washington Times The president's comments came as NBC News reported that Holder signed off on at least one of the controversial search warrants that identified a Fox News reporter as a "possible co-conspirator." TVNewser During President Obama's speech to the National Defense University, he was interrupted a handful of times by a protester who called for him to shut down the prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. As so often happens when there is a heckler, news coverage of the speech spent some time talking about the heckler rather than the meat of the speech itself. The Washington Post / Leonard Downie Jr. But the Obama administration's steadily escalating war on leaks, the most militant I have seen since the Nixon administration, has disregarded the First Amendment and intimidated a growing number of government sources of information -- most of which would not be classified -- that is vital for journalists to hold leaders accountable.

CNN Brings Stroumboulopoulos Into Fold (FishbowlDC)
ABC's George Stephanopoulos isn't the only newsman who gets to have a distinctive surname. Now he has competition -- at least in the surname department -- as CNN welcomes popular Canadian talk show host George Stroumboulopoulos to its Friday lineup. Ad Age / Media News Parts Unknown has done well for CNN, with new episodes averaging 740,000 viewers, according to Nielsen, far more than CNN had been attracting before Anthony Bourdain arrived. Stroumboulopoulos will feature interviews with figures from pop culture, music, art, politics and tech, according to CNN, with rapper Wiz Khalifa, actress Ellen Page and Walking Dead comic book author Robert Kirkman as his first guests. Deadline Hollywood Stroumboulopoulos will film in LA. CNN is certainly aiming to get a lot of mileage out of the new short-run show: Stroumboulopoulos will re-air at 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. on Fridays as well as at 11 p.m., 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. ET on Saturdays for the summer.

Politico's Jonathan Martin Joins The New York Times (HuffPost / The Backstory)
Politico's Jonathan Martin, who has been with the publication since its earliest days, is leaving for The New York Times, according to a memo obtained by The Huffington Post. Martin will become the paper's new national political correspondent, a storied position once held by the legendary R. W. Apple. FishbowlDC Politico's editor-in-chief John Harris explains why the move is as good for them as it is for the other publication. "From the Politico perspective, this is a day less for regret than excitement. We have an opportunity -- indeed, from both Robert Allbritton and Fred Ryan we have an unambiguous order -- to use this moment as a springboard." FishbowlNY In a memo announcing the hire, Carolyn Ryan, the Times' political editor, wrote, "Jonathan is a natural for the role: he has an unending passion for politics, an intrepid journalistic spirit and an astonishingly extensive Rolodex."

Woolwich Attack -- Why Newspaper Editors Were Right to Publish Horrific Pictures (The Guardian / Greenslade Blog)
The radio stations were on early Thursday morning -- was it right and proper for newspapers to publish front-page pictures of a man they called a terrorist brandishing a meat cleaver? Answer: yes. There are all sorts of arguments in favor. Practical and technological first -- pictures and film clips of the incident were across social media within minutes. Newspapers (and TV) would have looked completely daft to ignore what was already in the public domain.

ESPN Is Now Hiring -- Young And Cheap May Apply (Deadspin)
One ESPN source put it this way: ESPN "hacked" hundreds of jobs and will replace those laid off "with younger, cheaper, less experienced people." ESPN laid off a portion of its staff Thursday, a network spokesman confirms to us. How many? ESPN won't say, a tipster told us earlier Thursday. As another source put it in an email: "Most people let go were older, have been with the company a long time and collecting a decent salary for what they do. They will be replaced by younger, less experienced and most importantly a much less compensated employee."

The two sides have been embroiled in a fight that has landed at the National Labor Relations Board, and the union fired a salvo Thursday by disrupting Cablevision's annual shareholders confab.

Old Media Is Not Dead: Why Hedge Funds Have Fallen in Love With CBS (BuzzFeed)
Even though shares of CBS have gained an astounding 1,500 percent over the last four years and closed trading Tuesday at $51.03, some of the smartest money on Wall Street thinks its stock can go higher still. More precisely, hedge funds appear to have fallen in love with CBS stock, among them managers George Soros and Ray Dalio, who runs the industry's largest fund.

Ahead of An Avalanche, The Times Reminds Us This New Thing Is Theirs, And It's Called A 'Snow Fall' (Capital New York)
The New York Times' ground-breaking and Pulitzer-winning "Snow Fall" feature from late 2012 is still an endless topic of conversation it seems. 10,000 Words But it's not the future of anything. I don't think we should be forced to hold it up as a beacon of light in the digital age. We don't have to have a crystal ball. So until they do consistently innovative work, like "Snow Fall," let's stop throwing it around as an example of change.

The campaign has since increased its goal to $75,000. With it, Cotton's friends hope to "help with the enormous expense she will incur from her injuries."

The Oral History of NY1 (Complex / City Guide)
It was summertime in New York City, 1992. David Dinkins was mayor. The city was mourning the 27 passengers who died aboard U.S. Airways flight 405 after it crashed upon takeoff at LaGuardia. The Real World had just wrapped its first season at a loft down in SoHo. And in a modest studio on 460 W. 42nd Street, 28 freshly hired on-air reporters were sweating through "video journalism bootcamp," preparing for the launch of New York City's first 24-hour local news channel, Time Warner Cable's NY1. FishbowlNY Complex has published a great Oral History of NY1. It's well worth a read. Here are just a few of the NY1 people who commented on the network.

How Publishers Organize for Social Era (Digiday)
Publishers are seeing social as a big traffic driver across the board, but the question remains how to organize for this. For some very socially savvy publishers like a Mashable, this can mean a team of five-strong and a detailed strategy for matching pieces of content to the appropriate social platform. Yet for others, social is a much looser affair, involving perhaps a junior employee but with the burden ultimately falling on the content creators themselves to provide social juice.

Twitter Launches TV Ad Targeting, Twitter Amplify for Real-Time Videos in Stream (TechCrunch)
Twitter Thursday made the latest push in its bid to cozy up to Madison Avenue and the world of big-budget advertising, by tapping more into the kind of mainstream mediums where advertisers like to spend their money. Today the big focus is TV and your living room.

Do you think Facebook 'Likes' should be protected by free speech? mbist.ro/19VeWBF (via @allfacebook)

twitter Streamix_ML Comments and statuses sure, but how does a 'Like' like fall under free-speech scrutiny?

twitter MightyPen_Sword Opinion is free speech. I'm curious if what people share would be influenced by an "Unlike" button.

twitterJason Ansaldo Freedom of speech does not apply in any Internet situation where you sign up for a service. Your "freedom" is the ability to leave that service at any time.

twitterMaritza Herrera-DIaz Totally agree that this should fall under the protection of free speech.

twitterPeter G Millington-Wallace The word "free" can't apply to anything which is controlled or limited.
