Former Ms. Magazine Editor Mary Thom Dead at 68(AP / Huffington Post)
Prominent feminist Mary Thom, a writer and former editor ofMs. magazine who also was an avid motorcyclist, crashed while riding on a highway and was killed, her nephew said Saturday. She was 68. NYT Thom joined Ms. magazine in 1972 as an editor, rising to become executive editor in 1990. She was known as a journalistic virtuoso who shaped the writing of many of the feminist movement's luminaries, including Gloria Steinem. Ms. "We who are Mary's friends and family haven't absorbed her loss yet; it's too sudden," said Women's Media Center co-founders Robin Morgan, Gloria Steinem and Jane Fonda in a statement over the weekend. "Ms. magazine, the Women's Media Center, the women's movement and American journalism have suffered an enormous blow. Mary was and will always be our moral compass and steady heart." FishbowlNY Thom lived for decades in New York City and served as an editor for Ms. for nearly 20 years before leaving the feminist magazine in 1992. The glossy, which began as an insert in New Yorkmagazine, became a feminist powerhouse read in the 1970s but struggled to leverage commercial success with its ideological voice.

HuffPost Live in Deal With AXS to Put Show on Cable (NYT)
The Huffington Post has found a partial home on cable television for its eight-month-old Internet channel, HuffPost Live, courtesy of Mark Cuban. The company announced Sunday night that Cuban's cable channel AXS TV, previously known as HDNet, would soon carry HuffPost Live's programming for six hours a day. THR "Given its focus on becoming the premier cable destination for live programming, AXS TV is a perfect fit for HuffPost Live's real-time coverage of the day's news and a great opportunity to bring social engagement to TV," said Arianna Huffington, president and editor-in-chief of the Huffington Post Media Group. Lost Remote At the Lost Remote Show last week, Huff Post Live co-creator Roy Sekoff said that "social TV is at the core of what we do," explaining that the vast majority of the guests for its Boston bombing coverage were booked via social media. Since HuffPost Live began, more than 8,000 people have appeared on air.

AOL Music Shuttered, Staff Laid Off (FishbowlNY)
AOL has shuttered its AOL Music division and laid off its staff, according to pink-slipped employees on Twitter. Spinner.com, a rock-music news site under the AOL Music banner, announced suddenly on Thursday afternoon that it was shutting down. Minutes later, it said in a tweet that the entire music editorial division of the media giant, which owns The Huffington Post, was closing, too. VarietyThe move to shutter music sites shows the company is refocusing on higher-growth areas -- including original video content, which will be on display at AOL's Digital Content NewFront presentation next week. As of Saturday morning, the company had not issued a statement on the actions and had not responded to a request for information.

Obama Slings Arrows and Jokes at White House Correspondents' Dinner 2013 (Politico)
The White House Correspondents' Association dinner on Saturday night gave President Barack Obama a chance to take humor-laced shots at those things in Washington that rub him the wrong way - Republicans in Congress, the media, his critics - and he also directed plenty of friendly fire at himself. TVNewser In his remarks, Obama poked fun at CNN, MSNBC and Fox News. "I know CNN has taken some knocks lately, but I admire their commitment to cover all sides of the story, just in case one of them happens to be accurate," he said. Gawker How dumb is the White House Correspondents Dinner? This dumb. You're looking at The Politico's White House Correspondents Dinner memo, left behind at a party last night and obtained by Gawker. Salon Sarah Palin is no fan of the White House Correspondents' Dinner: The former Alaska governor took to Facebook and Twitter to mock the "DC assclowns" who attended the festivities. FishbowlDC The Daily Show's Aasif Mandvi gave us an impromptu review of Conan O'Brien's performance Sunday at the Thomson-Reuters/Yahoo! News post prom night brunch at Hay Adams, where a variety of journalists were buzzing around the room.

Meet Michelle Boatley, Fake Thomson Reuters Legal Publication Reporter (JimRomenesko.com)
Legal journalists in Australia were surprised last week to see Michelle Boatley's byline back in Australasian Legal Business (ALB), a Thomson Reuters-owned publication. A few years ago, Boatley was cranking out stories left and right: short pieces about law firm layoffs, merger deals, and firm expansions. Then she vanished. People who knew the secret about Boatley thought she had been killed -- by her editors. The prolific legal writer was not real, but a creation of ALB bosses.

But a dispatch supervisor was immediately skeptical, and a call to CNN confirmed it: The message was a fraud.

Glenn Beck on the CNN 'Pit of Despair' and Why He Got Out of Cable TV (Forbes / Mixed Media)
Glenn Beck thinks the television industry as we know it is dying, but that's not why he left it to start his own digital network, The Blaze. He's making a lot more money now than he did at Fox News, but that wasn't it either. He left to save his soul.

Can Politico Spot Gender Issues? (The Washington Post / Erik Wemple)
How did Politico's Dylan Byers know that New York Times' Jill Abramson "on the verge of losing the support of the newsroom" on account of her "brusque" manner? From information supplied by "more than a dozen current and former members of the editorial staff, all of whom spoke to Politico on the condition of anonymity." Hey, Politico: Is that the standard now? Can we just plow ahead and write the professional obituary of one of journalism's most prominent talents on the basis of some anonymous sources?

How Mother Jones Turned Itself Into an Online 'Secret Tape' Factory (Bloomberg Businessweek)
First there was the hidden video of Mitt Romney criticizing the 47 percent. Next came the surreptitious recording of Senator Mitch McConnell aides mocking Ashley Judd. And then, on the morning of April 25, Mother Jones completed the hat trick, publishing a secret video of GOP consultant Frank Luntz calling Rush Limbaugh "really problematic" for the Republican party. How did Mother Jones position itself as the go-to destination for secretive political recordings?
