Fox News: 'We Will Unequivocally Defend' Rosen Against 'Chilling' DOJ Investigation (TVNewser)
Fox News executive VP of news Michael Clemente released the following statement on Monday to TVNewser with regard to James Rosen being targeted by the Department of Justice: "We are outraged to learn [Monday] that James Rosen was named a criminal co-conspirator for simply doing his job as a reporter. In fact, it is downright chilling. We will unequivocally defend his right to operate as a member of what up until now has always been a free press." FishbowlNY According to court documents, the DOJ used Rosen's Justice Department security badge to watch when he came and went from the State Department, acquired a search warrant for his personal emails, and monitored his phone calls with a government advisor suspected of leaking intelligence. The New Yorker / News Desk Rosen was not charged with any crime, but it is unprecedented for the government, in an official court document, to accuse a reporter of breaking the law for conducting the routine business of reporting on government secrets. TVNewser The AP made waves last week after it was revealed that the DOJ targeted the personal and professional phone lines of hundreds of journalists in an apparent attempt to determine who leaked information. Slate They're going after him not as a witness to a crime -- nor as a pressure tactic to get him to give up his source (in this case, the source has already been caught) -- but rather, in the words of a Justice Department affidavit, as "an aider, an abettor, and/or a co-conspirator." In short, as someone who might be indicted under the Espionage Act. This has never happened in this country. (Even in the Pentagon Papers case, several newspapers were served injunctions not to publish stories, but no reporter or editor was ever investigated, much less tried, as a co-conspirator.) If the prosecutors go through with their threat, the entire enterprise of national security journalism -- which inherently involves uncovering secrets, to some degree -- will be in jeopardy. Politico / Politico 44 White House press secretary Jay Carney wouldn't comment Monday on the ongoing national security leaks case involving Rosen, after a weekend news report detailing the Justice Department's surveillance of him. "I can't comment on an ongoing criminal investigation, nor should I," Carney said in response to one of several questions on the case, offering a similar answer each time.

Tejal Rao And Nick Pinto Quit Village Voice (FishbowlNY)
Mere days after The Village Voice fired Michael Musto and others, the paper has lost two more writers. The only difference is that Tejal Rao and Nick Pinto quit. Rao and Pinto both tweeted that they have resigned from the Voice, making the paper even more hollow than it already is. NY Observer "Today, The Village Voice regretfully accepted the resignations of food critic Tejal Rao and staff writer Nick Pinto," said a statement from the Voice that we received Monday. "We thank Rao and Pinto for their excellent work, and wish them the best." But the Voice isn't acting overly regretful. On Friday, The Village Voice coincidentally (or not) posted job openings for a staff writer and a food blogger. HuffPost Legendary columnist Musto said Monday that the cuts that ended his career at the Voice have left the atmosphere at the paper "dour."

Yahoo! May Bring Ads to Tumblr Blogs -- With Permission (Mashable)
Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer took a call with investors Monday morning to address Yahoo's $1.1 billion cash acquisition of Tumblr, fielding questions about how Yahoo! plans to monetize a company that is not yet profitable but has a large and growing userbase. Perhaps most interesting for existing Tumblr users is Yahoo!'s plan to bring ads directly on to Tumblr blogs for users who want them. Crain's New York Yahoo!'s $1.1 billion purchase of Tumblr is certainly good news for the Manhattan-based microblogging startup and its 26-year-old founder David Karp, who is expected to net $250 million in the deal finalized Sunday. But they and their investors are not the only winners. The New York tech scene also has something to crow about: It has finally gotten its first $1 billion venture capital exit. NYT Yahoo! is moving its New York headquarters to the former home of The New York Times, on 43rd Street, east of Eighth Avenue, where it plans to expand. FishbowlNY Of course if Tumblr users complain about Yahoo! bringing more ads into their world, we could just remind them that Tumblr is free and so they really stop bitching. TechCrunch According to an analysis of Tumblr's 200,000 most-visited domains, 22,775 of them are adult -- or 11.4 percent.

Thomas Roberts, David Shuster Trade Twitter Jabs (HuffPost)
MSNBC's Thomas Roberts got into a Twitter fight with David Shuster on Monday. On Monday, Roberts wondered whether former IRS commissioner Douglas Shulman, who was appointed by President George W. Bush, may have targeted Tea Party groups because he thought they would "splinter the foundation of the Republican side." The fight was instigated by Shuster, a former MSNBC anchor who took issue with the suggestion.

What Patch Employees Were Told During The Friday Evening Conference Call (JimRomenesko.com)
On Friday afternoon, AOL president Tim Armstrong announced that Patch was restructuring and laying off some employees. (Bloomberg reports 40 people were let go.) CEO Jon Brod is returning to AOL Ventures and COO Steve Kalin is moving up to chief executive, Armstrong said. The changes were discussed during an all-company conference call that started at 6 p.m. ET Friday (when most media reporters were already in bars or headed home). I asked one of my Patch sources to brief Romenesko readers on the call. Here's his report.

In a commencement address to business students at Columbia University, New York Times CEO Mark Thompson hailed the company's digital subscription strategy and dismissed skeptics who say media outlets can't reinvent themselves. "[T]he launch of the pay model is the most important and most successful business decision made by The New York Times in many years. We have around 700,000 paid digital subscribers across the company's products so far and a new nine-figure revenue stream that is still growing."

Voice of San Diego Switches to WordPress -- And Adds A Bunch of Other Cool Features (10,000 Words)
I have long been fascinated by The Voice of San Diego, a membership-based investigative news site in Southern California. Their model is one from which many news organizations can learn -- they were doing memberships long before paywalls were cool, they understand the importance of covering specific niches in a community, they have a strong focus on watchdog investigations, and they've always made reader engagement core to their journalism. Monday, the organization relaunched its website with new software that uses technology to help amplify those goals.
