Grammys 2013: From Justin Timberlake to Frank Ocean, Music's Biggest Night Lives Up to its Name (The Huffington Post)
Pop music's elite convened at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Sunday for the 55th annual Grammy Awards. To judge by the Grammys, 2013 was a year with no overwhelmingly dominant musical force.CNET Here are six things the Grammys did right on social this year -- plus one they didn't -- and what folks who run other events, especially conferences, can learn. Twitter Blog The biggest spikes in Twitter conversation about the show came during these memorable moments: Jay-Z, Kanye West, Frank Ocean, and The Dream win for best rap collaboration (and Jay-Z jokes about The Dream's hat), Rihanna's solo performance, Prince announces Record of the Year, and Fun. wins best new artist. Gawker There are only two true approaches to being in the audience at a major televised awards show, forever in conflict: full, 100-percent commitment to having the time of your life, and full, 100-percent commitment to not giving a shit. On Sunday night at the Grammys, Taylor Swift took the first path, and Jay-Z took the second, and those of us watching at home were far better for it. Let's review.Mashable This infographic examines which Grammy nominees were dominating Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube going into the Grammy Awards. For example, Carly Rae Jepsen's viral hit "Call Me Maybe" had the most YouTube views out of fellow Song of the Year contenders: Fun's "We Are Young," Ed Sheeran's "The A Team," Kelly Clarkson's "Stronger" and Miguel's "Adorn."
Disruptions: Where Apple and Dick Tracy May Converge (The New York Times/Bits Blog)
In its headquarters in Cupertino, Calif., Apple is experimenting with wristwatch-like devices made of curved glass, according to people familiar with the company's explorations, who spoke on the condition that they not be named because they are not allowed to publicly discuss unreleased products. Such a watch would operate on Apple's iOS platform, two people said, and stand apart from competitors based on the company's understanding of how such glass can curve around the human body. The Wall Street JournalCapabilities that Apple is exploring for wearable devices remain unclear. But analysts and investors who have been tracking the field predict the company would release a product with many different functions and that the device would work closely with the iPhone. The Verge If Apple does launch an iOS-based watch, it will do so amid increasing competition in the wearable tech market - not only from Pebble, but from Google, as well. A company executive told The Times that Google hopes its Google Glass headset will eventually comprise 3 percent of its revenue by 2015, as the search giant begins its push to make wearable computing mainstream.
Social Media Stock Tracker: LinkedIn Crushes Earnings Estimates(SocialTimes)
The social media sector was up 2 percent last week as LNKD's fourth-quarter 2012 results dominated with strong numbers across all of its business segments, driving the stock up 21 percent on the week. YELP also performed well after an initial lukewarm reaction to its fourth-quarter numbers, but ZNGA led the sector in weekly performance with a gain of 28 percent, mainly on stronger-than-expected financial results and perhaps the speculation of potential online gambling opportunities in New Jersey (we remain cautious on ZNGA due to its disastrous previous two quarters).
