After reclaiming open territory controlled by the Islamic State (IS) group, Iraqi forces are now engaging their enemy in the narrow streets of Mosul. FRANCE 24 reports from the frontline.
Iraqi soldiers backed by artillery have begun the long and frustrating task of retaking Western Mosul from the IS group, with hundreds of thousands of civilians caught in the bloody crossfire.
Iraqi forces have made significant gains in recent days, including securing a key bridge over the Tigris river, but commanders admit IS group forces remain dangerously close to their current positions.
Morale remains high among soldiers, but the most difficult part of the military campaign – reclaiming the centre of the city – remains ahead.
