James Murdoch Accused Of Misleading Parliament Over Phone Hacking (HuffPost)
James Murdoch was accused Thursday of misleading Parliament about his knowledge of phone hacking at News of the World by the paper's former editor and top lawyer. NYT: Two former News International executives publicly contradicted James Murdoch's testimony to a parliamentary committee, saying Thursday that they told him of evidence in 2008 that suggested that phone hacking at one of the company's tabloid newspapers was more widespread. Reuters: James Murdoch said he stood behind his testimony to the committee, which had asked what he knew of a scandal that has forced senior News Corp. executives and two senior police chiefs to quit and raised questions over press barons' influence on politicians. Adweek: Matt Nixson, former deputy features editor at News of the World, was just fired from his current job at The Sun over allegations of "serious misconduct" while he was working at NOTW. NYT: A key figure in Britain's widening phone hacking scandal who had worked as an editor at News of the World surfaced in Florida Thursday, saying he was preparing to return to Britain and was talking with the British police. PRNewser: While Rupert Murdoch has been criticized for his reaction to the years-long phone-hacking scandal, Wendi Deng Murdoch has continued to get a lot of positive media scrutiny after thwarting a pie-slinging protester. Rebekah Brooks, known for her mane of red hair, among other things, could only hope for such positive coverage. TVNewser: Rupert Murdoch can take solace in knowing that the cable news channel News Corp. owns, Fox News Channel, was the highest-rated during the hearing in both total and demo viewers. Google / AP: Rupert Murdoch's British newspapers are set to lose exclusive access to British athletes ahead of the 2012 London Olympic Games after the phone hacking scandal that led to the closure of News of the World.

An Insider Pulls Back The Curtain On Condé's Digital Crises (Business Insider / Silicon Alley Insider)
Turning Condé Nast's digital department into a solid revenue stream is one of the company's biggest initiatives. minOnline: How much is that iPad app really worth to an advertiser? As both publishers and their clients still struggle to understand the real reach and impact of digital editions in this new world of the magazine app, Condé Nast and Adobe announced a new set of metrics for assessing digital versions of print brands. Folio: Bonnier is expected to announce that an agency it's working with is going to recognize the mag+ copies it sells as part of its rate base; mag+ is an initiative now under Moving Media, created by Bonnier for publishers to build tablet editions. Along with Hearst, Bonnier is reportedly partnering with MediaVest, a full-service media specialist. Condé is going a different way, collaborating with Adobe to aggressively monitor, gather and analyze audience engagement metrics with digital editions; the publisher plans to share its findings not only with its advertising clients, but with the publishing industry as a whole. WWD / Memo Pad: Condé Nast Thursday became the first magazine publisher to say it will disclose comprehensive digital sales numbers for the first half of the year. The publisher said it would release single-copy digital sales and digital subscription figures to the Audit Bureau of Circulations. The numbers will be released in August.

"Pathos" is an argument that appeals to the audience's emotions, while "Logos" is the attempt to persuade with logic. With its new marketing campaign designed to promote the newspaper industry at large, the Newspaper Association of America managed to leverage all three rhetorical strategies.

After first accelerating its plans for Google+ corporate accounts, Google said Thursday night that it's scaling back immediate testing of the feature. TechCrunch: After warning people about it for weeks, Google began enforcing its ban on all Google business profiles Thursday morning, to much consternation from, well, businesses. TechCrunch: Google is actually just fine with letting those brands/companies keep the accounts they set up, as long as a person is assigned to the account. Or something. Further, it's now rethinking the whole brand thing in general. So here's what we're gonna do. Make an account! As per Google's very, very clear rules, someone has to run it, so we've hired someone! Meet Techathew Cruncherin, our newest employee. He's shy, so you may not see him around much, but he lives here at TechCrunch headquarters. Under a desk. He's an awesome guy. And he lives for Google+. Loves it. Shares the shit out of our TechCrunch posts. It's awesome.
